Optimizing Practice and Building Community in Schools (Closing Session) (SC44)

SLPs bring a wealth of knowledge, skills, and competencies to the school setting that make us valuable contributors and partners. Communication should be at the forefront of our school communities for an effective and strengths-based climate that values the work of the SLP and the contributions of our students.

This closing session will explore how SLPs can optimize the school's climate and culture to improve awareness and recognition of their role and value to students. Speakers will discuss mindfulness; the value of cultural and linguistic diversity as well as neurodiversity; and the importance of honoring all communication modalities (e.g., AAC, sign language, etc.). The session will also discuss strategies to support school staff members and students who may have experienced trauma or adverse situations that may impact them within the school setting.

Learning Outcomes:

After completing this session, you will be able to:
  • describe two ways to promote the value of all communication modalities in all settings
  • describe two ways to model respect for cultural and linguistic diversity when communicating with students, families, and colleagues
  • identify two principles of trauma-informed care to implement with students, families, and colleagues
