What do we do when a child isn’t speaking or when speech doesn’t meet all their communication needs across environments? It’s time to consider augmentative and alternative communication (AAC). This introductory-level session will share practical strategies and tools for completing AAC assessments using an interdisciplinary approach. The presenter will explore feature-matching while keeping in mind the huge array of speech generating devices available today, assessment instruments appropriate for students with complex communication needs, resources for trialing devices, funding options, and strategies for ongoing assessment to ensure communication autonomy and avoid device abandonment.
