This session will be available on demand during the online conference. (The in-person session has been cancelled but the pre-recorded session will still be available at the online conference.)
The purpose of this session is to increase familiarity with the language of children who speak African American English (AAE) and how developmental language disorder presents within this linguistic system. The session will also discuss least-biased assessment methods and culturally and linguistically appropriate intervention methods for AAE-speaking children with developmental language disorder.
After completing this session, you will be able to:
describe how the language development of children who are developing AAE is similar to and different from children who are developing General American English
discuss the diagnostic conundrum associated with assessing AAE-speaking children's language and how to avoid it
discuss characteristics of culturally and linguistically appropriate intervention methods for AAE-speaking children with developmental language disorder
